Public Broadcasting Service’s 150 affiliates now link with Galaxy 16

MCLEAN, Va. – Intelsat, operator of one of the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial networks and leading provider of inflight connectivity, recently started delivering Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) educational, music and arts content across the continental United States, as part of an exclusive satellite distribution agreement.

PBS is a private, nonprofit corporation, founded in 1969, whose members are America’s public TV stations. It is a multi-platform media organization that serves America through television, mobile and connected devices and in the classroom. Starting earlier this year, Intelsat’s Galaxy 16 Ku-band satellite started delivering iconic PBS content to 156 broadcast affiliates reaching an audience of nearly 50 million primetime viewers.

“As America’s largest public media enterprise, PBS trusts Intelsat to reliably deliver on their crucial mission of providing high-quality programming to their member stations across the continental United States,” said Pascale Fromont, Vice President and General Manager of Media for Intelsat. “With the addition of PBS to the Intelsat family, all major broadcasters in the U.S. are utilizing the Intelsat fleet for content delivery.”

Located at 99W, the performance and reach of Galaxy 16 into North America were key factors in PBS’s selection of Intelsat to meet its distribution needs. Intelsat’s Galaxy fleet is the most comprehensive in North America, serving 123 million TV households.

With unmatched penetration, the high-performance Galaxy fleet provides media customers with the most efficient distribution to the premier cable, broadcast, and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) systems across the country.

Intelsat, operator of one of the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial networks and leading provider of inflight connectivity (IFC), announced today the expansion of Brazil-based infrastructure to Brazil and South America. In addition to meeting the growing demand for in-flight connectivity, the availability of the Intelsat CellBackhaul and FlexEnterprise platforms will offer cost-effective solutions that allow service providers to deliver voice and data services with better access to high-speed internet and mobile services to 30 million users.

Throughout 2023, Intelsat will collaborate with local satellite service providers to launch easier-to-use services for extending cellular networks and delivering more reliable high-speed enterprise connectivity. Additionally, Intelsat will build its fiber infrastructure in Brazil that integrates with its existing global IntelsatOne integrated terrestrial and satellite network. These services will be supported by Intelsat’s global network operations center, which has a local team and strong regional presence.

“Intelsat’s Brazilian customers now have a robust network infrastructure that allows customers to land voice and data traffic that meets government regulations and user performance expectations,” said Brian Jakins, GM and VP of Networks. “Key services like cellular backhaul and internet connectivity can now be more efficiently delivered to large regions that are otherwise difficult to reach.”

“Intelsat operations in Brazil will provide broadcasters and Pay TV programmers with connectivity to the IntelsatOne global network of satellites, teleports, and fiber allowing media customers access to new markets and services. Intelsat will offer managed services on the IS-14 C-band for the Brazilian cable market,” said Pascale Fromont, GM and VP of Media.

“The CellBackhaul launch can help bridge the digital divide in Brazil by bringing high-speed internet and mobile services to communities that previously lacked access. This can significantly impact education, healthcare, government, and other critical sectors,” said Ricardo La Guardia, VP of Sales, Latin America.

Better connectivity can positively impact the Brazilian market, enabling mobile network operators and telecom service providers to reach more customers and help spur innovation and growth in the Brazilian market.

After serving many Latin American broadcast customers for 15 years, Intelsat 11 (IS-11) is moving into an inclined orbit for a well-deserved rest and will serve as a backup restoration service satellite. IS-11 will eventually be decommissioned and safely moved to the high-orbit space graveyard.

Already, many media customers have migrated to other Intelsat video neighborhoods covering the region: including Intelsat 21, Intelsat 34 and Intelsat 14, the newest cable neighborhood in Brazil. The successful completion of antenna seeding at cable headends was an integral component in the overall success of this migration effort, whose technical and logistical complexity should not be underestimated. Migration planning takes years and involves global coordination among Intelsat teams to avoid any disruptions.

Launched in 2007, IS-11 is a hybrid satellite providing both C-band and Ku-band services. Latin American media companies have used IS-11 to distribute top-tier sports, entertainment, news and education programming to millions of viewers. It is also well known for delivering C-band services to Intelsat’s customers in the continental United States.

With TV the second most consumed media type among Latin American countries, reaching 93% of the population in 2021, the market is very active. As the media landscape transformed over the years, IS-11 enabled broadcasters to quickly scale and serve multiple mediums and platforms with its cost-effective and flexible network infrastructure. IS-11, combined with the power of IS-14, IS-21 and IS-34, had the coverage to reach more than 46 million viewers, delivering 77 of the 100 most-watched channels in the region.

The world’s media organizations remain locked in an intense battle for viewers and subscribers. With streaming providers and over-the-top TV services joining linear cable television companies in a fragmented, competitive, and oversaturated marketplace, the ability to survive and thrive requires massive investments in the development and production of content that will capture and retain the attention of viewers, and ultimately drive stronger advertising and subscription revenues.

In 2022, the top media and technology companies spent $140 billion on content development, a 10 percent increase from the previous year. That figure is expected to rise to $172 billion by 2025. Overall video consumption, which has increased by more than 60% over the past two years, is projected to continue to rise exponentially.  Success in an international market of thousands of providers, where acquisition costs can reach $200 per subscriber and churn rates can hit 70%, is dependent on the continuous generation of compelling content.

As if developing content wasn’t expensive and challenging enough, there’s also the task of distributing it all to affiliates and ensuring it reaches TVs and connected devices.

Historically, the largest media organizations owned and managed their own distribution infrastructure. However, with the increased demands to produce even greater volumes of content, media companies must devote the entirety of their attention and budget to original content development, pricing innovations, and bundling. They can no longer burden themselves with managing distribution networks that have only grown in size and complexity with industry consolidation creating even larger media monoliths.

In response to these evolving marketplace challenges, Intelsat is taking its well-established Managed Media Services portfolio to a new level, developing a “next first” approach to content distribution in the modern media world, offering media owners, content creators, and broadcasters end-to-end management of the distribution of content through its Managed Media Services. The satellite company is adding a completely seamless switching layer for sources and uplinks, offering media owners, content creators, and broadcasters the most reliable and fault-free end-to-end management of the distribution of content yet available.

Intelsat assumes management for the entirety of the distribution process, connecting directly to the company’s origination points, shepherding content across its fully redundant hybrid satellite and terrestrial integrated network, ensuring it reaches its destination without delay or degradation of quality. Managed centrally from the company’s network operations center, Intelsat incorporates multiple layers of redundancies at all levels of the distribution chain and leverages automatic switching technology to immediately identify and utilize the optimal channels. Intelsat Media customers are guaranteed the Service Level Agreement that meets their needs and up to 99.999% of service availability.

Media companies that utilize Intelsat’s Managed Media Services proposition become free to focus exclusively on higher business priorities. Staff can focus on core, mission-critical activities such as engaging affiliates, pursuing new licensing agreements, and driving advertising revenue. Additionally, with Intelsat providing managed services across the industry for a broad set of global programmers, customers benefit from economies of scale and synergies that can lead to greater cash generation.

But large media organizations are not the only beneficiaries of Intelsat’s media services offering. Smaller and mid-size content providers with limited distribution capabilities can leverage Intelsat’s network and services to achieve wider dispersion of their content and expand their audience. Global organizations that transmit a handful of channels across multiple continents can also use Intelsat services, eliminating the need to invest in their own global capabilities and accelerating time to market. In all cases, companies realize significant cost savings as financial resources previously directed toward the upkeep of infrastructure and other resources are no longer required.

Today, Intelsat is relied upon by some of the largest and most prestigious media brands in the world that no longer need concern themselves with uplinks, compression technologies, and all things associated with the day-to-day management of a distribution apparatus. A media conglomerate in North America has offloaded all its distribution processes. Intelsat is now transporting content across teleports and transponders to takers across the continent. In Asia, a prolific broadcaster is using Intelsat to deliver a mixture of news, sports, and entertainment to cable and satellite TV providers around the world.

Consumers crave content. Today, there is no shortage of options for accessing it. By leveraging Intelsat’s expertise, reliable service, network breadth and strength, and management capabilities, media organizations can maintain an edge in the race for viewers and advertising dollars in a complex and superheated competitive landscape.

Galaxy 33 separated from the vehicle at 7:38 p.m. EDT, and Intelsat confirmed its signal acquisition at 7:43 p.m. EDT. Galaxy 34 separated from the vehicle at 7:43 p.m. EDT, and Intelsat confirmed its signal acquisition at 8:20 p.m. EDT.

Galaxy 33 will be the replacement satellite at 133 degrees west once it is in service in early November. The satellite will provide service continuity for distribution to cable headends throughout the United States.

Galaxy 34 will replace Galaxy 12 at 129 degrees west once it is in service in late 2022. This satellite will serve as the new restoration payload for Intelsat’s Galaxy cable distribution customers, allowing the previous restoration role at 121 degrees west to be converted to a core cable distribution satellite.

Today’s launch continues Intelsat’s Galaxy fleet refresh plan that started with Galaxy 30 in 2020 and carries the first two of a total of seven new Intelsat satellites launching in the next six months.
